Neighborhood Watch

May 23, 2010 - There was a meeting of the Neighborhood Watch Committee on Thursday May 20th. Those members in attendance discussed the upcoming Block Parties and the placement of the new Neighborhood Watch signs. These signs will be placed in accordance with the covenants and restrictions on existing sign poles with only one or two new poles needed. The committee will suspend their meetings for most of the summer due to members' summer activities. They will still be working on setting up Block Captains and Block Parties for the summer.

May 7, 2010 - Two neighborhoods have Block Parties planned. Greenbriar Block Party scheduled for Saturday, May 22, 2010 and the Norwood Dr./Southwood Dr. Block Party is scheduled for Sunday, May 23, 2010. Please contact us if you are interested in serving as a Block Captain and having a Block Party in your neighborhood.

April 22, 2010 - The Neighborhood Watch committee met with 15 members present. The committee will be putting together a recommendation/request for permission to put up neighborhood watch signs in strategic locations around the Greenways. Also discussed was the need for lighting in the Park. They will be visiting with the City to find out exactly what we need to do to get lighting in place. One major focus of the NW committee is to appoint Block Captains and set up Block Parties throughout the Greenways. Several residents have committed to have block parties on their streets so you will be hearing more and more about these meetings throughout the summer. If you are interested in organizing a Block Party, please contact Annette Butler at annbutler88@att.net.

April 20, 2010 - ALERT! We received the following report from Johnny Kincanon.....
"We live at 7711 Garden Oaks. Yesterday there was an old brown minivan driving around, looked suspicious. They came to our door and rang the bell, my wife did not go to the door as she was there alone. When they left, they stole the furniture that was on our front porch! She did not notice it for an hour. We need to watch out for this van. Thanks, Johnny Kincanon"

April 17, 2010 - Greenbriar Dr. NW Block Party was held at Don and Donna Woolsey's home. Brent Barbee, Amarillo APD, was there to talk to the Greenbriar neighbors about Neighborhood Watch. Donna reports they had a great time. It was a wonderful opportunity to meet and welcome two new neighbor families. Their next meeting has been scheduled for Saturday, May 22, 2010. Kuddos to these residents for making the effort to meet together and get better acquainted. Criminals and Vandals....you better stay out of this neighborhood. The residents are watching out for each other.

March 25, 2010 - Neighborhood Watch Committee Meeting Report
We talked about the people who have volunteered to be block captains for their streets and went over having the parties, what kind of parties you have and etc.

There was some discussion about the solicitors and how they are already out in force. Brent Womble said that they have to have a license by the city to do soliciting, so call the APD when you have more than your share and let them be aware of this. He said don't be afraid to call the APD when you see something that is not normal around your area, he mentioned the squeeky wheel gets greased the most!

We talked about the break in on Woodmont the day before our meeting. Brent said if at all possible keep your cars inside at night and if that is not possible, don't keep checkbooks or personal information in your car, thieves are looking for things like this for an easy buck.

We talked about the Neighborhood watch signs. Mike Price is in charge of getting prices on that and I heard back from him on that yesterday. Brent Barbee, the man that handles that is out of the office until Monday and he will return Mike's call when he gets back. He did get a picture of the sign and the cost and I will forward that to you. We will put that before the board to vote on.

The next committee meeting will be Thursday, April 22nd. Anyone interested in participating in the committee or in becoming a Block Captain, please free to attend the meeting or email me at annbutler88@att.net. ---Annette Butler, Chairperson

We had a report of a vehicle break in on Woodmont. Thieves took an XM Radio and a checkbook. This was reported to the APD.

March 15, 2010
A Greenways resident on Pineridge reported today that their dumpster had been gone through and a trash bag taken that had some of their "shredded" mail in it. Please been aware that identity thieves regularly search dumpsters for information they can use to steal your identity. Be alert to what you are throwing away in your dumpsters. If you do not use a professional document shredding service, please take the time to effectively shred your documents before throwing them away.

March 12, 2010
A Greenways resident reported their car broken into on Wednesday night on Greenways Drive. Thieves broke out a window and took a briefcase. The car was parked in their driveway. If you find a brown leather/black cloth briefcase, please call us so we can return it to it's owner. This reminds us that none of us are exempt from this type of crime.
--Be careful not to leave anything in your car that will tempt thieves to choose your car to break into.
--Extra security lighting over your garage can't hurt, but would not necessarily stop someone from breaking in. Thieves are very daring.
--Always report these incidents to the Amarillo Police Department.

SPRING BREAK HAS BEGUN!! This is a great time for our kids and a much deserved break, but it also sparks more nighttime activity in our neighborhoods. Be alert to suspicious activity or activity past the City curfew. Watch out for your neighbor, particularly if you know they are away this week. Immediately report any suspicious or criminal activity to the Amarillo Police Department.

Have a great Spring Break!

February 28, 2010
There was a meeting of the Neighborhood Watch Committee on Thursday, February 25, 2010. There were 10 committee members in attendance.

--The committee will be appointing Block Captains to organize Block Parties. These will help Residents get to know their neighbors better and increase awareness of the activities in their neighborhood. As people begin watching out for each other and news of this heightened awareness gets out, we are hopeful that incidents of vandalism and/or crime will decrease.

--The Neighborhood Watch Committee will meet the 3rd Thursday of each month @ 6:30 pm.

--If you would like to become involved in the Neighborhood Watch Committee, please contact Chairperson Annette Butler at annbutler88@att.net

--Residents are encouraged to become more aware of their surroundings and what is normal activity and what is suspicious. Please report immediately any suspicious activity to the Amarillo Police Department. Their non-emergency number is 378-3038. Of course, you should report emergencies by calling 911.

--At the latest Board of Directors meeting, Board members approved the hiring of off duty APD officers to patrol The Greenways as security officers. This has recently been done on an experimental basis with good results. The HOA will continue these security patrols from time to time.

--We will soon be sending out information on how Residents may purchase "Neighborhood Watch" signs that can be placed on their fences.
